iPhone and AI: Your teens prefer to confide in ChatGPT rather than their friends

The Common Sense Media study reveals several worrying figures.

Conversing with a chatbot has become a habit for many of us. Generative artificial intelligence can be used in both our professional and personal lives. For teenagers, the relationship with chatbots goes even further. Artificial intelligence doesn't just widen inequalities between them. A study reveals that young people prefer to communicate with AI rather than with their real friends.

AI, the new confidant of suffering adolescents

Common Sense Media has published a rich study on young people's appetite for generative artificial intelligence. The NGO surveyed 1,060 American teenagers aged 13 to 17 between April and May 2025 to obtain its results. First, it revealed that 72% of them have already used an AI assistant, and 52% do so regularly.

Why do young people primarily use generative artificial intelligence? The findings are striking. While 46% view AI as a tool or program, 33% use it for social interactions. We even discovered that among these 33%, 12% of young people are looking for psychological support, 9% for a best friend or a friend, and 8% for a romantic relationship.

Nearly a third of young people surveyed find interactions with AI at least as satisfying, if not more so, than those with humans. What proportion of them have ever chosen to talk about something important to a chatbot rather than a real person? Again, a third of the teenagers surveyed.

24% even go so far as to share confidential information with ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. Why do young people have such a strong relationship with AI? Mainly because they find it entertaining and convenient. Teens also say they appreciate AI's constant availability, that they don't feel judged, and that it's easier to talk to a chatbot than to a real person.

It's worth noting, however, that 80% of those surveyed would rather spend time with their friends than with an AI . Common Sense Media is still sounding the alarm. The NGO hopes that adults will take up the issue to supervise and protect younger people.

“  Parents and caregivers need to remain vigilant and have ongoing conversations with teens about the fundamental differences between AI interactions and authentic human relationships. In addition, policymakers and tech companies need to work together to create safer alternatives that preserve the positive aspects of AI without putting children at risk.  ”

Do the young people in your life regularly interact with a chatbot? Do you know what kind of relationship they have with it? Tell us in the comments.
